BRUCE DICKSON (TDS) Senior Consultant and founder of Portland-based, Tourism Development Solutions.  Bruce Dickson has over 20 years of diverse industry experience in the closely linked areas of - tourism marketing, place branding, ‘destination building’, town revitalization, cultural planning and regional economic development. He is a respected strategic thinker and tourism planner, with a recognized capacity to deliver fresh perspectives and where necessary, challenge conventional wisdoms. Bruce has consistently assisted dozens of tourism associations, DMO's, city precincts, rural communities, city and county agencies, regional tourism attractions and events to create practical tourism development strategies that successfully boost their tourism performance. His clients also encompass leading tourism and parks commissions, as well as state and national marketing agencies. Along with his capacity for innovation, clients value his keen insights into local place & character and how these qualities can best link to market interests and what really motivates visitors. Because he also brings to projects an invaluable understanding of national and international tourism standards and trends, he knows where the bar really needs to be set for genuinely competitive destination success. His fresh eyes and thorough approach have frequently resulted in a revitalization of organizations' destination positioning and marketing; the identification of new product and market opportunities; and a more integrated and productive approach to the community development & civic tourism processes being pursued. IN SYDNEY: While working with Tourism New South Wales, he gained wide industry respect for his success in formulating a series of ground breaking, influential tourism strategies targeting visitors with interests in nature, cultural/heritage, day tour, indigenous, self-drive, food & wine experiences. The action plans generated fresh, more precise national & international marketing activities.  He was the primary author of Tourism NSW's influential & comprehensive Nature Tourism Plan. A feature of the plan is the holistic way it addresses all strategic marketing elements within a fully integrated and collaborative cross-industry and cross-agency framework. Also the way that it pioneered two major market research studies into 'Geotourism’ visitor values, interests & decision-making - one on the meaning & significance of 'nature in tourism' itself, the other on the 'impacts of overdevelopment on coastal destination choice’. IN USA: Since moving from Sydney (Australia) to Oregon in 2002, Bruce has collaborated with leading international consultancies Total Destination Marketing (Oregon), Calais Consultants (Sydney), SAI Marketing Counsel (Sydney) and Development Counselors International (DCI, New York), over numerous destination branding and destination assessment/audit projects. In 2008, on behalf of client Tourism Australia, he audited and identified their top 25 touring routes and the most outstanding, priority market products for each. These now form the backbone of Australia's National Road Tourism Strategy and its ongoing international marketing.  Subsequently for the same client, he completed a comprehensive destination and brand experiences audit for 'Australia's Green Cauldron' - a new international destination & travel brand, now part of the innovative 'National Landscapes of Australia' program.  RECENTLY: Bruce has conducted content development-based, storytelling consultations with Aboriginal communities & Elders; brand strategies in Southern Oregon & Portland; and tourism readiness assessments for established & emerging destinations such as Florence (Oregon Coast) and the McKenzie River (Cascade Mountains). His expertise in facilitating consultation processes proved particularly beneficial to clients by consistently boosting stakeholder buy-in and visibly strengthening project partnering and commitment. Bruce has served at the Sydney Olympics Media Centre’ and on national & state tourism advisory committees in Australia and Oregon, including those behind the Australian Wine Federation's National Wine Tourism Strategy and Oregon's Wildlife Conservation Strategy.
