PROJECTS
CHALLENGES ARISING 1. Shifting from a ‘County-based’ marketing focus - which is not the way travel destinations are normally perceived by visitors - to something more distinct, appealing & immediately identifiable. While also moving from a ‘we have it all’ response (to the County’s great assets) to a more tightly refined, market interest-based positioning. 2. Addressing the large geographical scope and true environmental diversity encompassed by Lane County. Everything from lively cities, towns and villages to forested mountain ranges. From wine growing agricultural hills & valleys to rivers, lakes, coastal headlands and beaches. A diversity now acknowledged (and embraced) within the newly introduced destination name. 3.Identifying a strong & truly unifying theme around which to focus the marketing ... in this case the range of available adventure options across the County. But equally importantly - all readily accessible within a day’s outing. Hence the special relevance and authenticity of the tagline delivered - ‘Real Adventures. Real Close.’

Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon Coast
The project involved a comprehensive re-thinking, re- branding, and re-positioning of Lane County, Oregon as a destination and was conducted on an Associate basis with Total Destination Marketing. The client (Travel Lane County) required research and development of a county-wide brand strategy, effectively done in parallel with the conduct of six sub-regional destination assessments. (Deliberately & strategically conducted this way, these tandem processes were thereby able to better inform and enhance each other’s results.) The project encompassed natural, urban, rural & coastal features from the County’s Cascade Mountains, Wild River, Willamette Valley, and Pacific Coast regions. The final brand strategy served as a significant catalyst for a major rethinking of the market positioning and strategic focus of Travel Lane County. At the consultants’ recommendation, the renaming of the destination - for enhanced tourism marketing purposes and outcomes - also occurred. The destination is now being successfully promoted under the more descriptive, memorable and recognizable marketing label “Eugene, Cascades and Coast” - to reflect the three key experience and geographically-based areas. The process incorporated in-depth stakeholder and market research interviews, workshops, online community surveys, and relevant external industry and trade interviews. The overall strategies and strategic experience-based marketing approach developed, have clearly differentiated the region. And its new brand is now being widely endorsed and adopted by private & public sector partners, and visitors.
