Growing Trends in Visitor Values*   Authenticity Respect for environment Concern for community well being Anti excessive development Seeking distinct local character
VALUES & VISION MATTER A more comprehensive and integrated approach to tourism and community development is necessary if the best qualities of a place for residents and visitors alike are not to be undermined and lost. This requires an informed and attentive community and responsibly minded leadership and management. And at best the sound footing of a shared community vision manifested daily in their local policy making & oversight activity.   Such attentiveness is vital, because degrading of what is truly special about the qualities & life of a place can occur not only by ill-conceived decisions, but by stealth. By the gradual, ‘unseen’ and cumulative losses caused by a process of unchecked attrition alone . - Bruce Dickson, TDS

INTEGRATED COMMUNITY TOURISM PLANNING THE SHARED VALUES OF TOURISM AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Converging community & tourism values: 'Civic tourism' development implications The belief can exist that community development and tourism development are inherently in conflict with one another. In reality, they potentially have much in common (including their shared potential for good or bad impacts). When properly approached and more comprehensively managed (as part of the same ‘big picture’), they can be combined to great effect ... generating valuable mutual benefits, often of an enhanced ‘place making’ and ‘quality of life’ value. Credible research studies now also show surprisingly harmonious overlaps of visitor & resident values here. Local Community Values   Authenticity Respect for environment Concern for community well being Anti excessive development Retain local character However, maximizing the development benefits and minimizing any undesired tourism impacts, requires some key elements to be in place - strong local vision and shared respect for local character and quality of life (including nature); a committed leadership; an open-minded, active and aware community; engaged and inclusive planners (and planning authorities); responsive & supportive politicians; responsible not ‘sensationalist’ local media, and both a market and community minded development outlook. One that encourages investors who recognize the true value and lasting benefits of sustainable tourism & community development (in practice) to their longer term business success. Achieving the right balance (and avoiding excessiveness in approach) is often the real development challenge, not the idea of adopting a smarter and more harmonious approach to local tourism & community development itself.  At first glance, this might seem unattainable in some respects, but it can be done. And already has in different places around the world. To get the ball rolling, engaging the wider community in well conceived consultative processes and consensus building over the most mutually beneficial tourism & community planning practices will help considerably. (If done sincerely & transparently.) Processes like this, at the very least, build deeper understandings of better ways to move forward. And when results-focused, highlight the most widely beneficial development options a place can pursue. *These values are shared by some of America's highest spending and most frequent traveling visitors (and certainly contradict some of the more fearful community perceptions of tourism and its visitor impacts). Careful integrated tourism planning, marketing and management practices can aim to deliberately reflect and target such trends - as part of a wider strategy to maximize tourism's benefits, while minimizing potential, undesired impacts.
